Winter Reads 2019
Hey everyone, welcome back to Shades of Tay - blog style!
I am being super ambitious with my reading challenge on Goodreads this year and I am trying to read 52 books in a year. Yep.... that's a book a week - am I going to get there? I doubt it, but I am going to try my best. One of my 2019 goals was to read more, what better way to motivate yourself than make it a challenge 💪. I thought sharing with you each 3 months (per season) what I've read so far and if I'd recommend it or not.
1. You - Caroline Kepnes
I'm sure by now everyone has seen the series "You" on Netflix and if you enjoyed it then PLEASE do yourself a favor and read the book. The twists and description in the book is just chilling. Definitely would suggest adding this book to your lineup this year, I am dying to read the second one "Hidden Bodies".
2. The Simple Wild - K.A. Tucker
I stumbled upon this author as a recommendation from a blogger I follow on Instagram and my gosh am I ever happy I did. This book was the perfect mix of romance and grief, if that's the kind of thing you're into then you need to read this! I have a ton of K.A. Tucker books on my list to read!
3. Dear Evan Hansen - Val Emmich
I read this before I saw the play and I'm so glad I read it to get the full context of what the play was going to consist of! Definitely an easy read, I think this should be a must read for high school English classes - it's all about social anxiety, bullying, relationships, etc there are so many really important lessons for young adults to learn about.
4. Love and Other Words - Christina Lauren
Christina Lauren is truly one of my favorite authors when I want to read a steamy, gut wrenching romance. If you enjoy the Fifty Shades series and aren't really sure what to read next - Christina has some really great reads.
5. After I Do - Taylor Jenkins Reid
I found this book in the dropoff box in our laundry room LOL! I picked it up and have now stumbled upon an author I am dying to read more of. This book is so raw and emotional - it's about a couple who has been married for years but has lost sight of why they fell in love. Each page you are just wanting to know more, this book was one of my favorite reads of the year thus far.
6. The 5 Love Languages - Gary Chapman
Are you in a longterm, committed relationship? If so, then you NEED to read this - it sheds so much light on the different love languages. I learnt so much about the way I need to be loved versus the way my partner needs to be loved. It really opens your eyes how to get on the same page as your partner and love them the way they need to be loved even if it's not how you would be loved.
7. Whistle in The Dark - Emma Healey
This creepy, thriller was probably one of my least favorite reads thus far - the end was super twisted and I was happy that I stuck it out to the end. However, getting to the juicy twists felt like it took FOREVER and it was quite boring until then. I think it's worth the read but just wasn't my favourite.
8. Calm the F*ck Down - Sarah Knight
How to control what you can and accept what you can't so you can stop freaking out and get on with your life.
ALL my fellow anxious friends this book is an absolute must read, it really had a huge impact on shifting my perspective. Sarah is so real and relatable - she has a ton of self-help books on the market. I cannot wait to dive into the rest.
9. The Hating Game - Sally Thorne
This was definitely a book that so many would enjoy - it's the perfect mix between funny and sexy. The banter between Lucy and Josh keeps it interesting - if you're looking for a light but exciting read this is the one.
10. Big Little Lies - Liane Moriarty
100% my favourite read of the season - I have no idea why it took me SO long to pick this book up. I finished it in 2 or 3 nights, I could hardly put it down. As soon as I finished reading I immediately binged the 1st season of the HBO show - so good as well. I looked up Liane Moriarty on Goodreads and added a ton of her books to my "want to read list".
11. Every Breath - Nicholas Sparks
You can really never go wrong with a Nicholas Sparks read, they always are such a good romantic read. I love a good romance novel - Safe Haven is one of my ALL time favs out of all the books I've read in my lifetime. If you're in the market for a book full of passionate romance, I would highly recommend this one.
12. One Of Us is Lying - Karen M. McManus
Holy sh*t!!!!!! This author is a complete genius, this book had me engaged from the very first page. It's a mix of suspense, drama, love and more - this book really had the perfect amount of suspense. I'm a wimp when it comes to thriller but this was a really great way to start enjoying more suspenseful and thriller type novels. I'm so glad I discovered this read and I cannot wait to read more from Karen.
Alright, so that completed my list of winter read that I completed in the last 3 months (Jan-Mar). 12 books down, 40 to go!!
Thanks for reading! Please leave me a comment below with your fav reads of the year so far and I'll be sure to check them out.
