Goals for 2019
Hey guys, welcome back to Shades of Tay - blog style!
I know, it's been a while... I'm working on a really personal blog post to explain my absence, hopefully I can get it finalized and share with you soon! In the meantime I wanted to kick off the new year with a positive piece and what better way then to share what my goals are for the next coming year. The goals I have set for 2019 are a little bit more simple than what you would typically expect from me. 2018 was a very busy year, I kind of lost sight of the more simple things that I wanted to accomplish so I am writing them out and sharing on my blog because I want to be held accountable.
1. Get back into writing
I have neglected writing (including my blog) for about the last six months and I noticed a huge difference in my mental health. The ability to write freely whether that be in my journal or in my blog gives me a sense of freedom and validation. There is something about releasing my thoughts into paper or onto a screen that truly lifts a weight of my shoulders. I didn't write nearly as much as I wanted to in 2018 as I had hoped. So this year I am vowing to write more even if it's about how I'm down in the dumps, I've always allowed the state of my mental health to dictate whether I write or not. But what I seem to forget is the sense of relief writing gives me even if it is a small paragraph about how shitty my day may have been. My goal is to carve out one hour per week to sit down with my candle burning and just write whatever comes to mind, whether I share it on my blog or not - I want to use that hour to disconnect and just write freely.
2. Drink more water
Sounds so simple but is something I often forget about, drinking enough water daily is good for your health and skin - it helps flush out toxins and increases energy levels. I deal with headaches on the regular so drinking enough water to keep myself hydrated is crucial. I downloaded the "My Water" app and it allows you to track all your beverages consumed in a day (water, coffee, tea, soda, etc). You can even get it to remind you to drink your water, you just set your weight and it provides a daily goal for you to consumer. As you keep entering during the day it shows you the percentage you've achieved. I've only been using the app for a few days but it has most definitely been helping, if you struggle with consuming enough water on the daily I highly suggest this app.
3. Focus on my health
This one is pretty vague and can mean something different for everyone but for me focusing on my health means prioritizing both my physical AND mental health by drinking enough water (like I mentioned in goal #2), taking my vitamins and medication on the daily, seeing my doctor and therapist regularly, and really listening to when my body needs a rest. Sometimes life gets incredibly busy and you put off the necessary things like going for a checkup at the doctors - you may not feel any symptoms that need any attention but checking in is never a bad idea. You're always better safe than sorry.
4. Make time for daily self care
This goal is another one that may look different for everyone for me personally my daily self care during the week is performed at night time because I work 9-5 Monday to Friday. I typically would start my routine with a shower or bath depends how late it is and how bad I just want to get to bed - if I am just taking a shower I make time to cleanse and exfoliate my skin as well as perform a hair mask (just some small things that make me feel good). After my shower I finish my skin care routine with a few other products (skin care routine coming soon), brush my hair - if it's wet then I will run the blow dryer through it quickly. I always put on clean and comfortable pjs and then crawl into my cozy bed. I do my best to get into bed at a good time, 10pm is typically my goal, I turn on my side lamp and light a candle - I give myself one hour before bed to either scroll my phone, watch a show/movie, or read a book. That one hour to myself is something I look forward to everyday, it completely relaxes me and gets me ready for the next day ahead. On the weekends it is a little bit different but I like to get up in the morning, make a tea or hot chocolate and grab my laptop to work on any of my business needs whether it's website updates or editing photos. Once I'm done I typically would just watch Netflix or read a book until I need to get my day going.
5. Read more instead of watch Netflix
Reading more is something that is really important to me this year, I am an absolute book worm - Indigo is probably my favourite store on the planet. I've been a big reader for years, there is something about diving into a book that really just soothes my soul. A lot of the time when I get really into a new show I completely abandonen reading and spend all my free time watching the show, which is great time to time but I personally would much rather read a book. Goodreads actually has a section you can fill out for a 2019 challenge, I decided to be super ambitious and am aiming to read 52 books this year - yes, one book per week. I'm just starting book number 3/52 and it is now the third week of January, so wish me luck!
6. Volunteer more
I don't volunteer often, which is something I want to change this year. Anytime I've volunteered in the past, I've always felt a sense of proudness that I had done something good whether it be for the community or just a friend that asked for help. With my full time job and side business I don't always have extra time but I want to make volunteering a part of my busy schedule this year. If there is an event or program you specifically love volunteering with please let me know, I'd love to know what kind of volunteering you guys do!
7. Do things I want to, not because others want me to
Okay, this one is huge for me - I always find myself going to events and such because I feel a sense of pressure. Whether that be from family or friends or work, because I am such a family/friend oriented person people really do expect me to go to every event. This year I want to make sure that I am participating in events, and visiting family, etc because I truly want to. This also goes both ways - I need to make a promise to myself that I am going to do the things that I want to do even if other people don't want me to. If I want to go get that tattoo, go on a vacation, take up kick boxing, etc I should do that strictly because I want to and it's something I have an interest in doing.
8. Study something new
Last year I started to study a bit of astrology because I am simply interested in it, so I want to continue to learn about it and finish the book I got. But I also want to learn more about dreams and the meaning behind them. Astrology and dreams are a complete random thing that has always sparked my interest, so this year I am going to try to study new things just because I feel like it. I'm so sick of saying to myself "oh I would love to learn about that" and never doing anything about it - I need to start saying to myself" I would love to learn about that, what are the steps I need to take to do so?" Links below the the astrology book I started last year and the book I'm going to pick up all about dreams.
9. Try not to over schedule myself
As I've mentioned before I live an extremely busy lifestyle, I have my full time job downtown Toronto which is busy in itself, I then have my side photography business on the weekends. My boyfriend and I are very family/friend oriented people so most of our free time goes to spending time with our loved ones - celebrating birthdays, holidays and just catching up. Looking at my calendar can sometimes be overwhelming espeically when I see 5-6 weekends completely booked at a time, it can be extremely triggering for my anxiety because it is so important for me to have my me time. Trying not to overbook myself definitely ties into goal #7, and doing things because I want to. The most helpful thing for me to not overbook myself, is not looking for things to do on those weekends I actually have no plans. For example this weekend coming up I have no plans and the only thing I really hope to accomplish is clean my apartment and binge Netflix - a much needed recharge weekend.
10. Spend money more wisely
Ideally this would say "don't spend any money" but that's unrealistic and I do enjoy splurging on experiences and materialistic things from time to time 😂. I really want to become a little more minimalistic and stop spending my money on unnecessary things. I'm a skincare/beauty addict but do I really need 6 face oils, 8 eyeshadow palettes and 5 foundations? No, most definitely not - I really need to make purchases in time of need, not just because it's the newest release and I want to post about it on social media. I've put together my budget per pay period and am going to start tracking my purchases that way I know exactly where I need to cut back and can start spending more wisely this year.
That's a wrap, thanks for reading my goals for 2019! Please leave a comment and let me know what your goals are for the upcoming year, I'd love to see what your focus is!
